Should my travel insurance policy include a deductible?

Many travel insurance policies include a deductible — the amount you pay for services included in your policy before your insurer starts to pay.

Let’s say you’re on a trip that gets derailed due to a medical emergency. You receive a hospital bill of $2,500 and your policy includes a $500 deductible. You would have to pay the $500 in hospital costs and would be reimbursed $2,000 or up to the sum insured by your insurer.

  • Travel insurance plans with lower deductibles usually include lower premiums — the fee you pay for your travel  insurance protection.
  •
  • The main factor in premium cost is the length of your trip. Age and health status may also impact the cost of your premium. A deductible may lower your premium when considered with other factors. But some travellers who want to avoid out-of-pocket expenses choose zero deductible plans.
  •
  • Let’s say you want to take a long back packing trip through Europe. You may choose a high deductible plan to offset higher premium cost due to the length of your trip. Or, if you are on a quick, domestic getaway, and you want to avoid out-of-pocket medical expenses, a plan without a deductible may be optimal.

Allianz Global Assistance offers a wide range of plans with and without a $500 deductible. These plans may reimburse certain expenses such as emergency medical, dental, emergency medical transportation, return of vehicle/watercraft, and pet return, , subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of each plan  Our Emergency Medical Plan offers the same benefits and deductible, however coverage is limited to one trip.

For international visitors to Canada, we offer a range of plans including $500,000, $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 in emergency medical coverage with a deductible.
