Travel insurance for international students

As an international student planning to study abroad in Canada, it is important to consider purchasing travel insurance with medical coverage to protect yourself against unforeseen situations. That’s because, as a foreign visitor, your government provided health care coverage often isn’t recognized in another country. Not only that, if you’re travelling alone, you want to know that someone has your back in the event of a medical emergency.

Luckily, there are coverage options for students travelling abroad—like the Visitors to Canada Plan through Allianz Global Assistance—designed to provide you with protection from minor inconveniences to major calamities and everything in between.

Accidents are called “accidents” for a reason. No one plans on them. Which is why it’s a smart move to purchase a travel insurance plan before you take any extended trip abroad, regardless of the reason. By doing so, you can be assured you receive coverage for interruptions you don’t see coming, like natural disasters, travel delays, lost luggage, or medical emergencies.

A pre-existing condition is defined as any illness, injury, or medical condition (whether diagnosed by a doctor or not) for which you've had advice, treatment, or experienced symptoms, prior to the effective date of your policy. The Visitors to Canada Plan offers coverage for pre-existing conditions in the following situations:

  • Age 59 years or under: stable for 90 days prior to the effective date.
  • Age 60 to 79 years: stable for 180 days prior to the effective date, except heart condition or stroke/mini-stroke unless a medical questionnaire has been completed and approved.
  • Age 80 to 89 years: only covered when a medical questionnaire has been completed and approved.

Your medical history will be reviewed when making a claim.

Even if you don’t think your pre-existing condition is serious, it is best to let us know before your plan is purchased.

While no two-travel insurance plans are the same, Allianz Global Assistance provides a full suite of comprehensive coverage through our Visitors to Canada Plans, such as:

Emergency Medical Care & Transportation: We can provide you with up to 100% reimbursement for certain eligible medical costs, including hospitalizations, prescription drugs, and even dental coverage. Which is especially important when you are in a new or unfamiliar country. We can even provide reimbursement for emergency transportation to the nearest medical facility.

Meals & Accommodation: Allianz Global Assistance knows a good meal and a warm bed go a long way to helping you feel your best. That’s why we may provide you with up to $1,500 dollars worth of coverage to go toward the cost of meals and accommodation if you, or a travel companion, are hospitalized on your return date.

Prescription Drugs: Care doesn’t just end after you’ve seen a medical professional, and neither does our coverage. Visitor to Canada plans can provide you up to 30 days or $1,000 worth of coverage for prescription drugs or ongoing medications related to a covered medical emergency that requires a physician’s written approval.

These are just only a handful of coverage options available to you through an Allianz Global Assistance plan. To be sure, a Visitor to Canada Plan isn’t like a traditional travel insurance plan, and it doesn’t cover for you for lost or stolen baggage, trip cancellations and delays, or other unforeseen situations you may encounter while travelling abroad.
