Travel insurance plans comparison

Travel is an investment you may want to protect with travel insurance. To help you roam with peace of mind, Allianz Global Assistance offers two insurance plans – Medical and Medical + Cancellation – which provide coverage a wide range of budgets and needs.  

Both plans offer coverage for emergency hospitalization and treatment, and medically necessary transportation to the nearest facility, or a Canadian hospital, and more. In addition to emergency medical benefits, Our Medical + Cancellation Plan includes coverage for trip cancellation, interruption and delay, and lost, stolen, or delayed baggage. 

Consider the following questions to pick the right plan for you: 

Travel insurance is something you may want to consider in case of emergencies. You should know that your Government Health Insurance Plan may not cover all of your medical needs if you are travelling to a province or territory outside of your own. Some expenses that may not be eligible for coverage in this instance include accidental dental injury, ambulatory transportation, and refills on prescription drugs. Either the Medical Plan or Medical + Cancellation Plan may help you fill your coverage gaps.   

Were you tied down during the pandemic and now you’re finally booking your dream trip? Since revenge travel is definitely still a thing, you may want to protect your investment with a Medical + Cancellation Plan. There are a wide range of medical and non-medical covered reasons for which you may be reimbursed non-refundable expenses in the event your trip is cancelled, interrupted or delayed.   

Here’s a scenario. Let’s say you are an avid runner, who has been training for the Toronto Marathon this year. You’ve booked your flight but sustain a stress fracture days before you are scheduled for departure. Within the limits of your policy, you may be eligible to have your prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses reimbursed. Our Medical + Cancellation Plan provides coverage for being medically unable to participate in a sport, when the purpose of your trip was participation in that sport.  

Travel insurers require that any previous medical condition be stable for a specified period before your departure date. Our Medical and Medical + Cancellation plans contain exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Coverage exclusions apply because not every health condition is unexpected or unforeseen. Based on your age and the length of your trip, our plans specify a period (either 90 or 180 days) that a previous medical condition must be stable prior to the effective date of your policy. 

If COVID-19 taught us anything, it’s to always prepare for the unexpected. There’s a number of reasons outside of your control why your travel plans could be canceled or delayed, many of which are covered in our Medical + Cancellation Plan. Some of those unexpected reasons include flight cancellations, or cancellation of a cruise, tour or travel package by a cruise company or tour operator, for any reason other than default. And if a customer becomes ill due to COVID-19 in their home province prior to departure or during their trip, and is prevented from travelling, the customer may also claim non-refundable costs under the Medical + Cancellation plan. 

Our Medical and Medical + Cancellation plans provide coverage for the return home of your travelling companion to his or her home province, and reimburses up to $500 the cost of returning pets who were travelling with you. We also coordinate the return travel and escorts for your dependent children in case of an emergency.
