Why trip cancellation and interruption benefits are important

Travel has picked up post pandemic but snarling lines at short-staffed airports, and resource-taxed airlines, make it more likely that your dream vacation
may be put on hold or cancelled. The need for travel insurance to protect you in the event that your trip is cancelled or delayed has never been more essential.

Travel insurance benefits offered by Allianz Global Assistance, depending on your policy, cover loss of certain non-refundable expenses if your trip is cancelled, delayed or interrupted for reasons beyond your control.  Let’s go over how travel insurance benefits by Allianz Global Assistance can help you get back on track in the event of trip setbacks. We’ll present travel scenarios to show you how we have your back, and how our plans would apply to you.

Here are some basics

Trip Cancellation coverage
protects you in the event that you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason. Trip cancellation helps you recover your non-refundable insured trip expenses which you prepaid prior to leaving.

Trip interruption coverage
protects you in the event that you’ve already begun your travel. This includes losses incurred if your trip is interrupted or delayed after the departure date, due to a covered reason.  Our plans also include baggage coverage, which provides reimbursement for loss, damage or delay of your stuff.  Both our Cancellation Plan and Medical + Cancellation Plan include trip cancellation and interruption benefits, so you’re protected before and after your departure.

Our Cancellation Plan provides reimbursement for certain non-refundable insured prepaid trip payments and deposits if your trip needs to be cancelled before you leave for a covered, unexpected reason. Some of those unexpected reasons include flight cancellations, or cancellation of a cruise, tour or travel package by a cruise company or tour operator, for any reason other than default. That’s also the case for your return home. And if a customer becomes ill due to COVID-19 in their home province before departure or, and is prevented from travelling, that client can also claim non-refundable costs under trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits.

Here’s a scenario. Let’s say you are an avid runner, who has been training for the New York Marathon. You’ve booked your flight but sustain a stress fracture days before you are scheduled for departure. Within the limits of your policy, you may be eligible to have your prepaid, non-refundable insured trip expenses reimbursed. Our Trip Cancellation plan covers in the event of being medically unable to participate in a sport, when the purpose of that trip was participation in that sport.

Check out the Allianz Global Assistance website for details on maximum trip cost reimbursements, maximum reimbursements for baggage lost, theft, damage, delay or misdirection, and other cost details.  There's also full details about what our Trip Cancellation Plan does and doesn't cover.

Our Medical + Cancellation Plan is an all-in-one plan that includes benefits for emergency medical attention, trip cancellation, interruption and delay, and lost, stolen or delayed baggage and more. We may provide reimbursement for certain costs for a medical (including ) or dental emergency that occurs during your trip. That’s in addition to the trip cancellation and interruption benefits mentioned above.

Our emergency medical benefits cover hospital accommodations and services, and medically necessary emergency transportation to the nearest facility, or a Canadian hospital. This benefit may also cover the return of your travelling companion to their home province, and reimburses up to $500 the cost of returning pets who were travelling with you. We also take care of headache inducing logistics such as coordinating the return travel and escorts for your dependent children in case of an emergency, monitoring the status of your medical case and communicating with you and others your request, and coordinating cash transfers between you, your friend, family member, or credit card company in case of an emergency.
