Important coverage updates and clarifications related to COVID-19 from Allianz Global Assistance in Canada

Feb 28, 2022

Effective February 28, 2022, the Government of Canada lifted its Level 3 global travel advisory to avoid all non-essential international travel due to COVID-19.

March 7 update: With the lifting of the Level 4 cruise ship travel advisory, expenses related to COVID-19 are now eligible under our standard plans as long as on the effective date, there is no Level 3 or Level 4 travel advisory related to COVID-19 in effect at the destination.
Given these ongoing changes to travel advisories, please note the following important clarifications related to COVID-19 and travel insurance coverage administered by Allianz Global Assistance in Canada and offered through www.travelinsurance.ca.
  • Emergency Hospital & Medical expenses are eligible if a policyholder tests positive while abroad and requires medical treatment for COVID-19. This includes coverage for the cost of a positive COVID-19 test.
  • Note that this coverage is available so long as no Level 3 or Level 4 travel advisory is in place for the policyholder’s destination on the effective date of their policy.

COVID-19 remains a known event for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption.

Therefore, for policies with Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits that were purchased on or after March 11, 2020, any Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption claims related to previous or future Government of Canada travel advisories connected to COVID-19 will continue to not be payable.

There are two exceptions:

  • Trip Cancellation coverage will remain eligible if a policyholder with Trip Cancellation benefits becomes ill due to COVID-19 in Canada before their departure from their province or territory of residence, and needs to cancel their trip as a result.
  • Trip Interruption coverage will remain eligible if a policyholder with Trip Interruption benefits becomes ill due to COVID-19 while on their trip, and needs to interrupt their trip as a result. Note: If the departure date was between October 21, 2021 and February 27, 2022 there is no coverage.
Emergency Hospital & Medical expenses continue to be eligible under Visitors to Canada plans if a policyholder tests positive while in Canada and requires medical treatment for COVID-19. This includes coverage for the cost of a positive COVID-19 test.
